Every result begins with a sample and a chain of decisions: collection, preparation, measurement and analysis. Small differences in any step can affect what is visible in the final data.

Controls and documentation make those steps legible. They help a reader understand whether a signal belongs to the biological system or the measurement process.

Good laboratory literacy means asking about both the result and the route taken to reach it.
