Genes matter, but a gene does not act in isolation. Biological traits emerge through interactions among genetic variants, cellular processes and environmental conditions.

This is why the same variant may have different effects in different contexts. It is also why a statistical association is not automatically a causal explanation.

A useful genetics conversation asks which mechanism is proposed and what evidence would distinguish it from other possibilities.
